Darstaed has decided on a traditional approach to their new range of vintage style tinplate mainline corridor coaches by manufacturing to a shorter 35cm specification but utilising a mix of eight-wheeled (four-wheel bogies) and twelve-wheeled (six-wheel bogies) for some coaching stock such as LMS Period I and LMS Period II dining and sleeping cars. With their new mainline stock Darstaed is now concentrating on the Big Four era and the British Railways (BR) period which will include BR (M), BR (W), BR (S) and BE (E) blood and custard, BR (M) maroon and green BR (S) covering the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s and may be used in conjunction with a variety of ready-to-run locomotives.

Design work has been based on extensive research with new tooling commissioned for manufacture: bogies are fully sprung with free-running wheels suitable for either two or three rail running. All Darstaed mainline coaches have interior seating and fittings with each compartment or open coach glazed and lit (including sleepers) except for passenger full brake and luggage coaches. Dining cars will also include working table lamps. Many of the new editions can be used in conjunction with previously produced steam-hauled Pullman coaches so it will be possible to mix and match with many Pullman train formations from Southern Railway, LNER and the many services from the BR era. The Set A brake coach of each livery incorporates a working tail lamp together with the three rail pick-up lighting operation. A two rail pick-up for brake ends is also available separately – all of which will undoubtedly appeal to the increasing band of gauge O model railway enthusiasts who view modern tinplate as grown Hornby Dublo.
