ACE Trains British Railways (S) Bulleid Blood and Custard Coaches
Bulleid tried to liven up catering coaches with the introduction of a vehicle known the ‘Tavern Car’ which was a deliberate attempt to make them feel like a pub as much as possible. Tavern cars externally were painted in a mock Tudor style with brick and half-timbered livery at one end. The interior of the coach was constructed as a timber panelled bar. Whilst not particularly popular with passengers at the time, the idea of the traveling bar has remained a feature on Southern lines for longer distanced London business and commuting trains ever since. The ACE tavern car and matching restaurant car is a faithful depiction of this interesting coach development in the 1950s. These coaches eventually saw service much further afield on the BR network including the ECML.
